  1. Hi, I'm updating someone's website. The domain name is registered at GoDaddy.com and it's hosted with the company that first designed the website (who has since disappeared off the face of the earth).

My problem is, although there is a Management System in place right now, the logo (a flash file) is unaccessible (it's in a folder named flash that you cannot in any manner).

From my understanding, once I point the GoDaddy.com domain name to the DiscountAsp.net hosting site, I can then connect to the website through FTP.

Would anyone have any idea if, through the FTP, I can then download this flash folder and obtain the logo? (It's a very detailed logo that would take too long to re-create).

Also, once thehost is pointed at discountasp.net, does this mean the the domain name is then transferred to DiscountASP.net? Or is that another step altogether?

wisemx is right. Download your files to your own computer from Godaddy using FTP. Then transfer your files to our webservers from your computer using FTP. We have some instructions for popular FTP clients in our knowledge base at: http://kb.discountasp.net/default.aspx?cNode=5S0L1E&pNodes=0F0W3S

To get your domain to resolve to our location, assuming that it was registered through Godaddy, we have this knowledge base article: http://kb.discountasp.net/article.aspx?id=10095

  3. Hmm, let me elaborate some more just to make sure this is still possible.

The domain name is registered through GoDaddy.com; however, the site itself is hosted through a small company (same company that designed the original site).

Once I get the domain name to resolve to DiscountASP.net hosting, the files would still be on the small companies host right?

Would GoDaddy.com have the ftp address that I could connect to, through a program like Visual Web Developer 2008?

If so, would I then connect to that FTP site, download the files onto my computer and pick and choose what files I want to keep for the new site hosted at DiscountASP.net?

It's best to think of Domain Management/Registration and Hosting as separate things. Godaddy is your domain registrar - so you would log into Godaddy's system to manage your domain name, not your hosting/ftp.

Your current host has your website files. To get a copy of your site, FTP into your current host and download your website files to your computer.

If you sign up for hosting with us, we will provide you with FTP information so you can upload your website to our webservers. You can deploy apps with Visual Web Developer 2008

  5. FTP is both a secure and un-secure file transfer protocol.
Essentially it is the same as transferring files across your own network.
If you have site credentials you can access and copy any files needed.
To transfer files from a GoDaddy server to DASP is no problem, all you need is an FTP tool and the credentials.
    Need more info than that?

  6. In order to FTP into a site, you need the ftp address and a login/password, correct?

If that's a correct statement, the person who set this all up is no longer in contact with us (going on over 6 months).

Therefore, I'm assuming if I can't get in touch with this person, then those files will be lost forever?

Correct. If you do not have the FTP information and cannot get a hold of the developer, can you contact the host directly to see if you can get access? You would probablyneed to authenticate with the host that you are authorized to access those files.
