  1. If you have the unlimited subdomains addon, can that be used with Domain Pointer Email Aliases to be able to send/receive using multiple domain names?

Based on this KB article, it sounds like you enable Domain Pointer Email Addresses by choosing specific existing domain pointers. If you have unlimited subdomains, that's not the same thing as domain pointers .. right?

Is it the case where if you have unlimited subdomains, then you can add as many domain pointer as needed for free? I sort of doubt it's setup that way, but it does seem logical since unlimited subdomains essentially means unlimited domain pointers.

Any info is of course appreciated.

  2. Unfortunately the domain pointer alias does not work that way.

Please also note the difference between subdomain and the actual domain.

If your account has a Root Domain Pointer (an additional domain that points to your main site), you can activate an alias-based email service for the pointer domain. What that means is any email address on your primary domain will also accept messages sent to the same address on the pointer domain.

For example, let's say your primary domain is domain.com, and you use domain2.com as a domain pointer. If you set up the email address [email protected], that mailbox will also accept mail for [email protected].

The mail service for pointer domains is alias-only, so you cannot set up a separate address on domain2.com. Any domain2.com addresses have to point to an email address on the primary domain name. [email protected] will not work unless [email protected] exists.

Note that if the same message is sent to [email protected] and [email protected] you will receive two copies of the message in the [email protected] mailbox.

  3. Thanks for the information.

I submit this as a feature request then. From what I know, SmarterMail does not care if the domain alias is a root domain pointer. As long as the MX record is pointing to SmarterMail, any domain name can be entered into SmarterMail as an aliased domain.

It seems like this is a limitation of the DASP control panel to only allow root domain pointers to be added to SmarterMail as aliased domains. There could be an additional interface (or modified interface) in the DASP control panel that would allow host names that are non-root domain pointers to be entered for the purposes of being added into SmarterMail as an aliased domain. This would not hurt anything, or cause any cost for DASP. This modified interface I suggest would not actually create any additional host headers, etc .. it would simply be for the purpose of being able to add additional aliased domain names into SmarterMail. This modified interface/feature would probably only be available for people with the unlimited subdomain addon.

It would be nice if this could be added someday.
