  1. Need to upload MDF,LDF or accessfiles to my SQL server 2005 account.
Would I need to zip these files since I have a 300K limit?
From what I read SQL server mgt studio express tooldoes not come with an import/export wizard for access
files, MDF orLDF files. I would need 'SQL Server Migration for Access'
    http://www.microsoft.com/sql/solutions/migration/access/default.mspx
Maybe VWD 2005 express ed. could do this? I would not know.

If someone could give me anidea how Iwould get thesedatabase single filesemailed to me processedinto my DASP SQL account and wheredo I exactly (tables?)insert these files?

Last question, do Ineed toback-up my SQL server account before I insert
    new database files?

    THanks lots [IMG]

  2. Howdy mun,
First off...As you know I'm always willing to help.

It appears you are currently at a point of being a bit confused about this.

Overall the DASP methods for doing this are not very difficult at all but honestly they can be confusing at first.
It's no harder than learning to walk however.

Just don't make me sing "Put one foot in front of the other, and soon you'll be walking across the floor." [IMG]

Yeah, OK, I'm a nut. (Simple confession)

Back to the business at hand.
Yes backup your DASP SQL Server database even if it is currently blank.
This will give you something to fall back on if needed.

As for your Express DB, you can only mount one of them but it is very simple for that one.
All you need to do isFTP it to yourDASP server.
You can access the ExpressDB via sitepaths to attach it in your Control Panel.

You can also use the ASP.NET SQL Reg tool from your machine if what you need is Membership.

  3. Sorry...Mark the post was done late and didn't make sense.

So, this is my situation. I had a friend make up a tiny database.

He had originally sent themin an email attachmentan.MDF with a .LDF log file(s) but I don't have

SQL server 2005 on my computer.

I onlyuse 'SQL servermanagement express ed.' and 'VWD 2005 express ed.' as tools.

I don't see the point of downloadingtrial(huge software) just to look at some table objects.

So he sent me a second email with a _____.BAK file version.

I guess I can either go to myDASP SQL server 2005 acc't panel 'tool suite'and insertthisemailed ___.BAK file

use this tool to restore from a backup (.BAK) file ofmy SQL 2005 database.

    1. Upload the BAK file to your site.
    2. Enter the path of the BAK file relative to your website root and hit the restore button.

Or on my'database explore': data connections>ASPNETDB.MDF database folderin my VWD 2005 express ed.

insert the original .MDF and .LDF files directly into the ASPNETDB.MDF.

Is this the correct way to insertthe emailed .MDF fileor must I load to a specific object insidemy ASPNETDB.MDFusing my VWD 2005 express ed.[IMG]

Hope this is better explanation of problem...

  4. Hi,
You don't really need any other tools but it will take a little more to get the data on-line.
You can attach that Express DB locally in SQL Express then create scripts for the objects and data.
After that use SQL Express to connect to the remote DASP SQL Server and execute those scripts.

It's tricky doing it that way but it can be done in 30 minutes or less.

If you get stuck I'm willing to do it for you, no charge.
    Salute,
    Mark

  5. To be honest SQL Express may be free but it causes stress for the rest of us. [IMG]

OK, I got that out of the way. hehe

Yes you can use Scott's tutorial but I'd suggest only doing the local part.

Once you have generated the SQL scripts use SQL Server Express to run them, connected to your DASP SQL server.

That tool does escentually the same thing I'd step you through with SQL Express to turn the Express DB into scripts.
You will be generating scripts for the objects and records.
Youmay need to modify the first three lines in each script, database name. (You can leave it out for Defaults)

  6. I would prefer you give me the step-by-step instructions. I'm sure you have DASP clients to help and don't want to waste your time on my issue with database.

I understandI canattach the files by right clicking on a node

and select attach on my SQL server management express ed. is that correct?

Problem is don't know which node to hit for attaching object and I understand both MDF and LDF objects must be attached.

I found this link wondered if this is similar to DASP?

Creating scripts to view usingVWD 2005 express ed. is no problem (gridview) etc.

Tell me what I'msuppose to do...

    Thanks lots...[IMG]

  7. Well... I'm wondering what's going to happen to allmy DASP SQL server 2005 stuffon my accountnow if I make the switch to DASP SQL server 2008?

Note: DiscountASP.NET is testing SQL Server 2008 and will be adding it for Developer accounts soon.

If your ready to try IIS7 / Windows Server 2008 and need an honest incentive...
    Go to
    https://www.discountasp.net/signup
    Use this promotion code: WISEMX
(You'll get an entire year for the price of just 6 months.)
I promise to help you with whatever is needed, I'll be there for ya.

Sounds ok...I'll do it but not until DASP is ready to accept2008 SQL Server Expressusers.
Does this affect VWD express 2005-2008users and can I still use WAT?

    I run a vista platform.

In the meantimewould you help me with uploading my database?

  8. In all my tests so far SQL Express 2008 connects to the DASP SQL Server 2005 servers just fine.
It would be the new data types you'd need to be careful with.
But if your code works with SQL Server 2005 you shouldn't have any trouble. Far as I've seen.

The Microsoft SQL Server Express team contacted me and they're excited about getting the word out.
I updated my most recent blog post to add some of their notes:
    http://blogcastrepository.com/blogs/wisemx/archive/2008/06/12/sql-server-2008-express-rc0.aspx

Whatever you decide I'm here for ya bro. [IMG]

  9. Ok... I've installed Database Publishing Wizard (DPW) but noticedI would have to config. the DASP connection again and I get the feeling this isredundant.

So, Mark if you can show me the 'DASP way' with my tools: SQL server management express ed & VWD 2005 express ed.

I'm ready to read your instructions on getting these MDF, LDF objects convertedinto SQLscriptsand into my SQL 2005 databaseaccount usingthe tools I haveyou may want to use.

    Thanks...

  10. No doubt you're correct. I'll make the switch to SQL server 2008
    next month.

In the meantime could you show me the procedureto upload mfd,ldf
    object files to server?

    Thanks Mark

  11. On my vista I've installed Powershell, .net framework 3.5 SP1, SQL server 2008 express is loaded but needs to be configured. Have any suggestions on what all the components are suppose to be???

  12. Indeed I can.
What do you need the steps for, creating scripts for objects and records?

  13. If install completed you should be all set.
Have you run Management Studio yet?

  14. No have not run Management studio yet? It's still a 2005 version. Is there a 2008 version??

Out of the long sql server 2008 express config. that's required to load program on my system
I have failed on 2 conditions:

    1)
InstallFeatureSpecificRules: SQL Server 2008 Setup configuration checks for rules group 'InstallFeatureSpecificRules'
Sql2005SsmsExpressFacet Checks whether SQL Server 2005 Express Tools are installed.
Failed The SQL Server 2005 Express Tools are installed.
To continue, remove the SQL Server 2005 Express Tools.
    2)
BlockCrossLanguageInstall: Checks whether the Setup language is the same as the language of existing SQL Server features.
Failed The Setup language is different than the language of existing SQL Server features.
To continue, use SQL Server Setup installation media of the same language as the installed SQL Server features.

I removed all sql server 2005 express program so I should not fail (#1)the next time I configure.

I don't know what to do with #2 failure somethingabout set up language?

The following is my setup suggestions:

    SQL SERVER DATABASE ENGINE:

    default instance

server config: NT authority\network service >>> automatic

sql server reporting service: NT authority\ network service>>>>automatic

sql full-text filter daemon launcher: NT authority\local server > manual
sql server browser :NT authority\network server >disabled

Database engine config: windows authentication mode

reporting services config: install native mode | default config.

Installation rules: failed cross language installation
failed sql server 2005 express tools

There are other featuresif I pass I would need to answer installing SQL server 2008 express is the longest
install program I have ever encountered lots of readings to install properly.

  15. Try to run the install and the installed SQL 2008 products as Admin.
I've seen the Express version fail, reading some of the local xml files.
Just run it again from the start as Admin and see how it does.
Yes SQL Express 2008 does take a long time to install.
    Salute,
    Mark

  16. I did install as admin.

sql server 2008 express w/adv.service is bit of a mystery.

I failed to install on two counts and I can't seem to find the files to activate re-install, it did install
on an HD I never use so I posted on link below for help:

    http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=385&SiteID=1

I'm no expert on this but my gut feeling isI'm out of my league on this advance sqlstuff.[IMG]
I might have to go back to sql server 2005 express.

I still haven't converted my MDF object file to my DASP sql server 2005 yet.

  17. I am in all honesty trying to help you get through this.

Hopefully Mike will respond to your post in the Express forums.

As for the install tools you should have a menu folder with the Install Center link in it.
That's a cool new addition to all of the SQL Server 2008 products.
    Salute,
    Mark

  18. No problem Mark; it's not a problem.

I'll give it a till Wednesday if it's not config-ed on my system by then could we
go back to the original plan of helping me transfer the MDF to DASP sql server 2005?

    Thanks [IMG]

  19. No prob bro, I'll help you any way you decide to do it.

If you are charging your client why not just charge them an extra $50 and then buy the Developer version of 2005?
It sells on Amazon for $49 and you have the entire boat, SQL Server 2005 Developer version.
Well worth that price and it will solve all of your current limitations.
    Salute,
    Mark

  20. Ok Mark...change of plan sql server 2008 express is loaded on my dev box!!!

What's next for sql server 2008 express?

I'm going to end this thread here 'cause it's too long.

I'll use the question aboveas new topic.

  21. Glad you got it working bro, SQL Server 2008 Express is just as good as the Dev version of SQL 2005.
    Maybe even better. [IMG]
Please keep me posted on how it goes for you, I'm keeping the Msft Express team up-to-date.
    Salute,
    Mark
