  1. When I have a hyperlink on my aspx page (target=_blank)that references a word document, I am prompted for a username and password on some computers. Other computers using the site bring up the document in the browser without the prompt. Does any one know what causes this?

The website you are accessing might using Windows Authentication Mode for protected contents.

  3. the website is hosted by discountasp.net. so if it's a website setting , you would think it would happen all the time. it does however seem to happen on computers that are logged into a Windows domain but does not on home computers that are in a workgroup. Do we have control of this website setting?

What is the URL to the domain? I can test it on my computer. My computer is on a domain.

It is possible that it may be the proxy that's asking for password??

i was able to load the document w/o inputting any login information.

i think the authentication is probably coming from your proxy server or something in the network.
