  1. Sorry to see you talking to yourself bro. :)

With SQL 2008 the Agent isn't an active role anymore.
Don't even worry about it, yes you should leave it as it was.
It isn't used to browser servers like it was in previous versions.

As for 2005 being messed up, that can happen for sure but all you need now is the Management console for 2008, it will open all of your other DBes.

If for example you have an Express version and then install the Developer version you will not see your Express tools, they will be rolled into your "gooder" tools.

Yeah, I'm on 2-wheels so "gooder" is a word. ;-)

This Webcast was one I did that shows how that works btw:

  2. Ok, I'll just leave the broken parts of SQL Server 2005 Express as is.

I was installing management console for 2008 Express, and it bombed with this error:

    instance features version edition
    name
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
sqlexpress sqlengine_vnext 10.15.1600.1 express with advanced services

    popup error:

there are validation errors on this page. Click ok to close this dialog box. Review errors at the bottom setup page, then provide valid parameters or click help for more information.

    error at bottom:

the instance id is required but it is missing

  3. I think something hitched with the broken parts.
Go to your Control Panel and in the section to Uninstall SQL Server use the Change option that should come up, sometimes this resolves the missing parts by repairing the installation, same thing btw with many errors in Visual Studio, same CP option.

  4. Interesting... Ok, I tried "repair" from add/remove programs. A "browse for folder" dialog box popped up that says "browse for SQL Server 2008 R2 installation media"...

NOTE: From the control panel, I can't see any trace of SQL Server 2005, so it is 2008 that would be repaired.

I did download an installation file to my hard drive named SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe... 223,799 KB. What file type and file is it looking for?

Would it do any good to uninstall SQL Sever 2008 and start over? Maybe 2005 will "show up?"

  5. Don't think so but what I would do is remove each of the SQL Server parts that show in the CP, backup any DB first of course, then try re-installing that.
It does do a better job if you create the DVD or use the Developer version.
Did you know the 2008 Dev version is fully loaded and sells on Amazon for under $50?

  7. That's a great idea but I'm not a student... I assume I'd have to prove it?

Unfortunately, yes. You can either provide them with transcripts or your .edu email address must be affiliated with the program.

  9. This is the solution then!

I'll share with everyone what I found out the last couple days. Some users find difficulty removing the SQL Server 2005 tools completely from the machine. A registry value is manually deleted to complete the uninstall process for users who have issues with the Express removal procedure.

This is the registry value: (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server)

I did all this, rebooted, and all traces of 2005 and 2008 were gone. This morning I tried installing 2008 and it didn't get very far. The error msg was too long to copy but I could attach it here but I give up on either express version.

The developer version for $50 is great!! I'm going to do that today and get back to you. Thanks for the info!

  10. Microsoft SQL Server 2008: Developer Edition from Amazon

Sorting by price, there is one for $44 but it's for Windows 2000 server. One for $99 but for Windows 2000/NT. And one for $149 that says: "Platform: No Operating System"

    What does this mean??

Will it work on Windows XP Professional?

  11. Do you have an old machine running XP?
It's no longer supported far as I know.

  12. Yeah... Bios date is 9/17/2002.

What about one of the skinny versions? Like SQL Server Denali CTP3, which includes SQL Server Express LocalDB?

  13. Dang bro. . .sorry but I can't offer any help on XP.

  14. SQL Server

    Hey guys,

i ended up buying SQL Server 2008 Developer for 42.99 on ebay. thanks for the idea! however, it crashed again... but this time for the first time i looked at the system requirements and minimum ram is 1GB... i only have 1/2GB. so i gotta wait till i get my $3600 back from the bank after they investigate my identity theft case to get a new laptop...:(

keep you posted... what will i need to add to my account here for SQL Server 2008?

  15. Once you're ready just the SQL Server addon for your account. (From your Control Panel.)
